Making music is not a competition... It is not a race to the top... It is a unique chance to work together, feel together, emote together, create together, and more.

Benefits of Choir

Form new friendships by singing with others

Singing in a choir is a team sport! It’s incredibly rewarding to work as a team to create something amazing. Without the pressure of performing solo, you have the ideal scenario to grow and build connections with the people around you. Develop your listening and cooperative skills as you tackle new challenges and reach new heights each week.

Don’t read music? No sweat! All members are provided with materials to help them learn the music for each concert, whether that is by listening to performances online, or having access to customized practice files. Each choir has its own password-protected webpage, where you can access everything you’ll need to have a successful season.

All DCCS Choir singers aged 8 and up are encouraged to participate in Choir for Hire, our extracurricular program getting choral music out into the community. At no extra cost, singers of all agers are asked to commit to a few extra practices and performance events. To inquire about having our Choir for Hire group sing at your event, please email our Artistic Director.

Reduce stress levels and improve your health

When you sing in a choir, feelings of connectedness are increased. When you sing in a large group, the bonding that results provides a natural icebreaker and improves our social networks. Our sense of happiness and wellbeing are improved, partly because of the release of positive neurochemicals including dopamine and serotonin. Among the many mental and physical health benefits, choir is beneficial at improving breathing, posture and muscle tension, and immunity. It has also been shown that singing can help those suffering from dementia.

At DCCS we believe in inclusivity and providing a welcoming, safe space for all. In choir, one of the key concepts is harmony. Harmony is the wonderous outcome of diverse sounds coming together as one. Harmony requires diversity to exist. Our choirs welcome people of all abilities, gender and orientation,  socioeconomic backgrounds, and cultural heritage.

Built into all Choral programs is commitment-free preview classes. We know that every potential singer wants to be sure that the program will be a good fit for them, especially before committing money to a full season. Our Choirs

DCCS has four choir streams. Starting with Kindergarteners, the Piccolo Junior Choir introduces young children to the joys of choir. We build that sense of connection and harness the joy of singing that children naturally have. We also start to introduce early concepts that build the foundation for reading music. Once the Piccolos become early readers, they move up to the Bravura Children’s Chorus which introduces simple harmonies and concrete music literacy. We explore genres, modes of expression, and how to connect with audiences. With changing voices and interest, kids graduate from Bravura and move into the Vivace Youth Choir. There, they learn to embrace their diverse personalities and interests, while having a supportive team around them. Youth are able to go through their most vulnerable and emotional years with choral concepts being reinforced every step of the way. For adults and older teens, the Cantabile Mixed Choir is a diverse group performing a wide range of music that celebrates continuous learning and sense of community.

Piccolo Junior Choir

For ages 5 to 7, this energetic program is designed for young singers who are hotwired for performance. Young singers are ready to skyrocket their skills in group performance, keeping steady beat, reading music, singing in key, and performing with attitude. We play a variety of percussion instruments and games to promote learning, while also learning about the basics of choral performance and success in singing.

Bravura Children's Choir

For ages 8 to 11, our Bravura students have a fun and positive rehearsal culture that builds singers' confidence and independence as they discover their growing voices. Singers learn beginner harmony and the skills required to read music and perform competitively on stage. There are lots of opportunities for solos in this group, to give students the chance to showcase their rising talent and bravura!

Vivace Youth Choir

Teens aged 12 to 17 are captivated by this high-spirited choir, the perfect place for budding performers! This group has the option to travel for festival competition. Each year, students create their own "One Night Only" concert with choreography, costumes, and individual talent showcases. Singers will learn intermediate harmony, vocal techniques, and more to set them up for lifelong musical success.

Cantabile Mixed Choir

For anyone age 15 and up, whether you're soprano, alto, tenor bass - we welcome any and all new members! This choir tackles some fun and challenging music over the course of the year. You'll stretch your musical horizons, improve your singing at any age or stage, meet new people, and become involved in a supportive and vibrant community. All while doing great things for your mental and physical health!
