The Dawson Creek Choral Society resides in and honours the ancestral lands of the Sikanni, Dane-Zaa, Slavey, Cree, and Saulteau peoples, land that is colonially known as Treaty 8 Territory. DCCS works to amplify Indigenous voices while seeking to decolonize our European music traditions through practice and performance.
About the DCCS
The Dawson Creek Choral Society is a provincially registered non-profit providing music education opportunities in the South Peace region. Our programs connect a vibrant network of like-minded individuals who believe that music has the power to impact lives all around us. We’re a busy organization with many fundraisers and community events working year-round. DCCS is a member organization of the the South Peace Community Arts Council and the British Columbia Choral Federation.

Programs
Each of our four programs play a role in supporting the mission and purposes of our organization.
Kindermusik is an internationally accredited program for children aged 0 to 5 and their caregivers. Classes are specifically designed to capture the curiosity and energy of preschoolers and catapult them toward school readiness. We use music to showcase benefits to literacy, numeracy, physical awareness, self-regulation, independence, bonding, and more.
Our choral program is divided into four main age divisions starting with the youngest singers at 5 years old. Each group meets on a weekly basis, and gets to work on music fitting a variety of themes and exciting styles. Choir, to us, is a vehicle for not only musical excellence, but for developing community, humanity, harmony, and empathy. Singing has a ton of physical benefits too!
*Returning Fall 2025* Musical Theatre is an energetic intensive program for youth aged 9 to 15. Students are mentored in their abilities to sing, act, dance, and perform in fully-staged musical theatre productions. We believe that acting is reacting, and teach performers to engage with their costars onstage and with their audience, delivering a spectacular experience for all.
Outside of our main program activities, the Dawson Creek Choral Society is an advocate for the arts and cultural scene in our region. We believe in building a better world for future generations, and do so by connecting with local partners to respond to needs in our community. We volunteer, fundraise, and use our events to amplify the many voices of our community and our members.
Our Purpose
Purposes of the Society
as filed in 2018 with our transition to the new BC Societies Act
- to provide an opportunity for people of all ages to participate in music programming for the purpose of education, recreation, health and wellness, and community;
- to inform members about local, regional, and provincial performance and educational opportunities as related to programs;
- to liaise with local government and media regarding opportunities, upcoming performances, and member accomplishments; and
- to collaborate with other community organizations to promote creative exchanges between the arts.
Our Mission
To CREATE a culture of lifelong love for music;
Through participation, learning, and performance we use music to inspire people of all ages. We weave into each program the fundamental human interests of curiosity, empathy, and passion. When individuals discover the joy of music, especially from an early age, they become lifelong leaders in their communities and build hobbies and interests to last a lifetime. Membership and tuition fees remain as low as possible to ensure all people can participate without financial barrier.
To CONNECT with members, their families, and our community;
Music is a powerful connector and community builder. Friendships are built, families connected, and we build a unique internal culture. When we engage in the community and connect with other performing organizations across Western Canada, our connections are made even wider. We’re dedicated to the growth of our minds and hearts, and our programs seek to connect that growth with the needs of our community.
To DISCOVER our collective voices in song; and
The human voice is the primary tool used in DCCS programs. Whether that is by teaching early vocabulary and literacy, or developing vocal techniques through choir and musical theatre. Our program directors are intuitively conscious of the written word and the value of poetics in music. We use our voices to amplify text, and together we discover that music is more than just what we sing.
To INSPIRE harmony in the world around us.
By discovering joy, connecting communities, and raising our voices, DCCS creates harmony in the world around us. Harmony is the wonderous outcome of diverse sounds coming together as one. Harmony in society not only celebrates, but requires diversity to exist. We believe in being a safe space for the LGBTQ2S+ community, racialized minorities, senior citizens, new Canadians, and people of all abilities.

Board of Directors
Our volunteer governance board oversees financial security, longevity, and adherence to our mission and purpose. The Board meets on a monthly basis throughout most of the year. According to the DCCS Bylaws, our Board can have between 3 and 11 directors to represent the Society and its mission. To contact the Board of Directors, please email info@dcchoralsociety.ca.
