Dawson Creek Choral Society

Welcome to our 2024-25 Season

This year is all about rebuilding our programs. While we continue to have a strong foundation in program content, brand, and reputation, the Dawson Creek Choral Society had to start off 2024-25 at zero in terms of finances. As we rebuild and regain our footing, we have the ability to hire and pay professional musicians and other artists to take part in the creative work that we do. For 2024-25, we will rely heavily on volunteers, sponsorships, and strong registrations in order to make it through and have a stronger position for grant funding next season.

Although our programs have started for the season, registration remains open for all Kindermusik and Choir programs.

About this Season

Our fully-accredited Kindermusik® program provides captivating learning and bonding opportunities for infants and preschoolers with their caregivers. Children internalize the foundations of steady beat (essential for sports and general coordination down the road!), recognize the differences between various sounds, and begin to plan their next moves (leading to self awareness and inhibitory skills). Kindermusik builds children’s confidence and prepares them for school, future activities, and positive interactions throughout their lives.

In this “rebuilding” year, a key priority is re-establishing the DC Choral Society’s place as a community organization. Having been inactive, there is a lot of networking to be done to increase awareness and recognizability. Our first adventure into the community was in organizing a one-stop Community Registration event on September 5. This event, attended by more than 30 non-profit recreation and arts program providers, is likely to become a semi-annual event that our community begins to look forward to.

In October, we have to major events which fall outside of our regular programming. Kids Music Day, celebrated around the world each October, is something that is new to us this year. DCCS is hosting free Kindermusik demo classes and an Instrument Petting Zoo, an open event allowing children and kids-at-heart the opportunity to handle and test a wide variety of musical instruments.

World Mental Health Day falls on October 10th, when we are hosting In Unity for the second time (the first being in 2019). This event features free mental health screenings through Beyond the Blues while otherwise seeking to raise awareness and decrease stigma around mental illness and substance-use. This event is made for the entire community, and we welcome youth, seniors, Indigenous people, new Canadians, families, and all people in our region to attend.

Our Winter Gala concert, historically taking place in December, has been a January escape for the last two seasons. Come Sail Away is themed around escaping the cold, sailing the ocean blue, warmth, and getting through difficult times.

The Vivace Youth Choir starts planning their One Night Only show as early as September. The group chooses showstopping music to sing together, and they begin to plan solo performances, costumes, stage design, fundraising, and advertising to put on a successful show. This event showcases Vivace’s collective and individual talents while also providing mentorship on event planning, production, and all the hard work that goes into something great.

The final event of our season is the Spring Dessert Concert, where members work away at putting together a luxury dessert buffet. We see a spread of everyone’s fanciest desserts and family recipes that are to die for. Into the Unknown will be a concert all about survival and resilience, followed by adventure, taking risks, and embracing the exhilaration of the unknown. The Spring Dessert Concert will also have a brief ceremony after the show to recognize our many outstanding members.

2019-20

Our Season 6…the incomplete season. This season started off with our first mental health event, which brought together service providers from across the community with a common goal of promoting mental wellness. There were performances throughout the day including spoken word, educational presentations, and music. Our Musical Theatre year comprised of two productions, the first being Elf JR in early December. Again a double-casted show, the performers and audiences all had a blast! We introduced the Solstice event which concluded with the sharing of a beautiful handmade yule log cake in the traditional French style. Our Winter Gala concert was our first shot at a January show. It was a tropical oasis in the middle of our snowy January. Less than a week after returning from the Prince George & District Music Festival, the youth choir performed a breathtaking One Night Only, which was captured by ChetTV. Not even a week later, our programs were shut down, leaving the Frozen JR and Outside these Walls performances first postponed and later cancelled.

In 2018-19, DCCS’ fifth season, we had our established lineup of events beginning with Bright Lights and City Nights, a holiday concert going back into a retro and urban style. One Night Only was fantastically performed by the youth choir, and received awesome reviews. Our musical that year was Disney’s Beauty and the Beast JR. We added some extra performances to the lineup to make sure that anyone who wanted to see the show, could. This year we also double casted many of our lead roles, giving more opportunities for kids to take on a bigger challenge. Flights of Fancy was another dessert show completely themed around flying and what happens up in the sky. 2019 was also the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, which was a theme throughout the performance.

Our fourth season was the first year we had an accredited Kindermusik® program, and our first year that the youth choir put on the One Night Only show. The Winter Gala, again held at Unchagah Hall, was a lovely evening of wintery songs, northern lights, and being cold. The Musical Theatre production that year was Madagascar: A Musical Adventure JR. This show was infinitely fun and energetic which shows in the photos we have of that year. 2018 was our first Dessert concert, with a theme all about rain. The audience enjoyed delicious desserts for the first time, as well as some rain trivia and other fun.

In 2016-17, DCCS became more streamlined, with even more support from the community. Our Winter Gala concert, hosted at Unchagah Hall, was a beautiful evening with special guest performers. Our Musical Theatre production that year, sponsored by DGS and Big Time Haulers, was Disney’s Mulan JR. That spring, we took a journey throughout time with a wide variety of selections from early Renaissance to modern day.

Our second season brought the introduced the Musical Theatre program, then called the “Broadway Chorus”. The rights to this first show were purchased by DGS Astro Paving. Choirs were again divided into two nights per performance, with December and April shows. DCCS partnered with the Lake View Learning Centre to deliver a concert featuring an Edmonton a cappella group, High Street Sound. This concert was focused on hope, acceptance, and anti-racism work. The 2016 spring concerts were made up entirely of film music and movie soundtrack hits! These were fun concerts with fantastic music that is always fun to revisit.

The very first season we ran, starting off as “Dawson Creek Community Choirs”. That season, we had some wonderful donations to help with startup costs, including the South Peace Oilmen’s Association who paid in-kind for our choir risers that you still see us perform with today. While the City of Dawson Creek couldn’t help us out, Mayor Dale Bumstead donated personally to our group. MLA Mike Bernier secured a cheque for us from the Province, and DGS Astro paving purchased our projector and screen which were essential teaching assets in the first few years. Our winter concert took place over two nights, the second night being joined by Bear Mountain Brass. Spring concerts were also divided into two days. It was also during this season that the Dawson Creek Choral Society became a registered non-profit.
